The University of Southern California Trojans defeated the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes 30-18 on Saturday night at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, keeping their College Football Playoff aspirations intact. The upset occurred under steady rain that had soaked the stadium for more than four hours before the game.
USC entered the contest with a 7-2 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the Big Ten Conference. Ohio State held a 6-2 overall record and a 4-1 conference mark. The Buckeyes played without starting quarterback Julian Sayin.
The Trojans built a 20-9 lead by the halftime whistle. Their offense converted four of its first six drives into scores. The defense limited the Buckeyes to just one touchdown, which came in the late fourth quarter. The team did not allow a score until that late game drive.
Freshman wide receiver Trent Mosley recorded 145 all-purpose yards. Tight end Mark Bowman contributed a 71-yard reception that included a hurdle and several broken tackles. Kicker Ryon Sayeri added a 54-yard field goal in the first half.
USC outdisciplined the visitors despite being outgained by 126 yards. Ohio State committed 11 penalties during the game. The Buckeyes also held the ball for nearly 20 minutes longer than the Trojans. USC forced a key turnover in the first half and held Ohio State out of the red zone on four of five trips.
Head coach Lincoln Riley addressed the postgame press conference after the victory. He described the win as a major moment for the program. Riley said, "Every game is its own season. It's just what it feels like. This was a big one."
The win arrives one week after a 24-7 loss to Wisconsin. That game featured the worst offensive performance of Riley's career. The previous week, USC had secured a road victory against Penn State. Riley noted that the team had to move past the Wisconsin loss to achieve the result on Saturday.
Questions regarding Riley's future at USC intensified following the Wisconsin defeat. On Tuesday, Riley stated that he wanted to remain at the university and believed he was the right person for the job. He said, "If I didn't want to be at this place, I wouldn't have come here in the first place."
After answering questions from reporters on Saturday, Riley read a handwritten statement aloud. The note emphasized internal joy over external applause. Riley said, "This win is for all the staff members, the players, the leaders, admin, all the people within the walls."
He concluded the statement by reiterating his commitment to the role. Riley said, "I'm going to continue to fight on because that's what being a Trojan is all about. Adios."
