Eight candidates for the Idaho House of Representatives gathered in Jerome on Wednesday night to answer questions from local voters. The event, hosted by the Jerome Civic Club, served as the final public forum for District 26 before Election Day. Approximately 50 residents attended the meeting, which covered topics including property taxes, income tax, and the proposed construction of data centers.
District 26 includes Blaine, Lincoln, and Jerome counties. It is considered a purple district, meaning both Republican and Democratic candidates have competitive chances of winning. Three seats are up for election, and the field includes Republican, Democratic, and independent candidates. The forum provided a direct channel for voters to ask candidates about their positions, a practice that is becoming less common in other parts of the state.
Lorna Irwin attended the event and submitted one of the questions asked of the candidates. She inquired about the legislative plans for the upcoming session depending on whether Proposition 1 passes. Irwin noted that she preferred the depth of information available at the forum compared to television advertisements or mailed campaign materials. She described the traditional media coverage as surface-level, while the in-person setting allowed for a clearer understanding of the candidates' beliefs.
Kathy Bartholomew, president of the Jerome Civic Club, stated that the group aims to connect voters directly with legislative candidates. The club, which consists of about a dozen members, has focused on maintaining in-person events as a way to share information. Bartholomew said the club is building a reputation for facilitating these connections, allowing residents to ask candidates about their platforms and attitudes directly.
The forum took place on a Wednesday evening. Other nearby districts and some statewide races, including the governor's race, have seen fewer public dialogue events. The Jerome Civic Club continued its tradition of hosting these meetings to ensure candidates were available to the public. The event allowed residents to hear from all eight candidates in a single setting.
Voters in District 26 have until October 30 to cast early ballots. Election Day is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3. The candidates will compete for three seats in the state legislature. The forum concluded with the final responses from the candidates to the submitted questions.
The meeting was held at a venue in Jerome. The audience included residents from Blaine, Lincoln, and Jerome counties. Questions ranged from financial issues to infrastructure projects. The candidates responded to the inquiries without time limits or moderators. The event ended after all candidates had addressed the topics raised by the public.
