Manchester United ended a nine-game winless streak with a 3-2 victory over AS Roma on Tuesday, a result that temporarily stabilized the position of manager Michael Carrick at Old Trafford.

The match saw the home side trail 2-0 after 17 minutes, a deficit that had raised questions about Carrick's future after a fifth consecutive league defeat. However, the tide turned in the second half following a tactical substitution.

Bruno Fernandes initiated the comeback by scoring a retaken penalty in the 57th minute. The original attempt was saved by Roma goalkeeper Devis Vásquez, but referee Jesus Gil Manzano ordered a replay due to encroachment. Fernandes converted the second attempt to make the score 2-1.

Matheus Cunha then scored twice in the final 10 minutes to complete the turnaround. His equalizer in the 83rd minute came from a tight angle, assisted by a precise pass from 19-year-old Shea Lacey, who had entered the game in the 75th minute.

Cunha celebrated the winner by jumping into the stands, an action that earned him a yellow card. He received a second yellow in stoppage time for a foul on Leonardo Balerdi, leaving United with 10 players. The squad held on to secure their first win since September 10.

The victory offers Carrick a reprieve before Sunday's home match against Aston Villa. The United hierarchy had hoped to see the manager survive a difficult stretch, and this result provides immediate confidence for the players and staff.

However, the win comes with a notable physical cost. Carlos Baleba, the midfielder signed from Brighton this summer, suffered a hamstring injury just 37 seconds into the second half. He limped off holding his leg, a significant blow for a squad already missing Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw.

Baleba's injury complicates Carrick's plans for upcoming fixtures, including an away trip to Liverpool. If the Cameroon international is sidelined for an extended period, the manager will face additional pressure to manage a thin squad.

Supporters continued their protest against the club's ownership structure during the match. Fans in the Stretford End released hundreds of green and gold balloons, representing the club's original colors, and threw tennis balls onto the pitch before kickoff.

The demonstration reflects ongoing dissatisfaction with the Glazer family, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, and Jason Wilcox. While the on-pitch performance improved, the off-pitch tensions remain a defining factor in the current atmosphere at Old Trafford.

Carrick will likely retain his position for the next match, but his job security remains dependent on results. The next two Premier League games present a difficult test, and a loss in either fixture could reignite calls for change by the end of the calendar year.
