Michelle Hooper is departing Searchlight Pictures after serving as executive vice president of marketing for the past two decades. Her departure marks the end of a tenure during which she managed publicity, awards, and creative marketing strategies that significantly shaped the studio's reputation in the industry.

During her time at the company, starting in 2006, Hooper helped guide Searchlight to nearly 200 Academy Award nominations. The studio converted 49 of those nominations into wins, including best picture for five major films. Those winners were Nomadland, The Shape of Water, Birdman, 12 Years a Slave, and Slumdog Millionaire. The studio also accumulated more than 130 Golden Globe nominations, with best picture nods for the same five titles plus 15 other films.

Hooper was actively leading campaigns for the current awards season when she announced her exit. Her immediate responsibilities included marketing efforts for Wild Horse Nine and Behemonth!. A longtime colleague described her as a leader who could identify how a film fit into the cultural moment. That colleague noted her ability to gather real-time feedback to close out marketing campaigns effectively, calling her departure a loss for the studio but a gain for whoever hires her next.

Before joining Searchlight, Hooper built her career in television entertainment communications. She worked at CBS Entertainment as director of entertainment communications, where she helped shape the publicity strategy for the show Survivor. She also spent four years as vice president of entertainment publicity at Fox Broadcast. In that role, she managed campaigns for television series including The Simpsons, Arrested Development, and American Idol.

Variety included Hooper in its 2025 Women's Impact Report. The report featured her alongside Searchlight executives Rebecca Kearey, DanTram Nguyen, and Katie Goodson-Thomas. Their collective work was credited with ensuring a strong performance at the Oscars for that year. The publication noted that their marketing efforts secured 10 Academy Award nominations for the films A Complete Unknown and A Real Pain. Kieran Culkin won the award for best supporting actor for his role in the Jesse Eisenberg film.

In a joint statement, the marketing team explained how Searchlight navigates industry challenges. They stated that the studio relies on its adventurous film choices and deep relationships with filmmakers. The team said these factors allow the company to weather business difficulties by trusting that audiences still want films that entertain, challenge, and provoke.
