HomeSnacks has named Meridian the best place to live in Idaho for 2026, a ranking that places the suburb ahead of the state capital. The list reflects a comparison of multiple recent quality of life indicators, including employment, housing, schools, and safety. While Boise has traditionally dominated national conversations regarding livability, the new data suggests neighboring communities are now competing effectively on overall metrics.
The shift is notable given Meridian's rapid expansion. A local resident who moved to the city in 2002 notes that the population has grown from approximately 40,000 residents to nearly 143,000 in the intervening years. This growth has brought increased amenities, such as more restaurants, shopping centers, and parks. However, the resident also points to associated challenges, including heavier traffic, ongoing construction, and rising housing costs.
Boise continues to perform well in other assessments. Redfin’s 2025 Idaho rankings and iBuyer’s 2026 recommendations both place Boise at number one. These sources highlight the city's strong employment opportunities and outdoor recreation options. The discrepancy between the lists illustrates that different organizations weigh various factors differently when determining a community's desirability.
Eagle ranked second in HomeSnacks' 2026 list, following Meridian. The survey included data from Travel + Leisure, Niche, HomeSnacks, Redfin, and iBuyer. Analysts looked for communities that consistently performed well across multiple categories. The goal was to identify places that offer a strong balance of lifestyle benefits and practical necessities.
The rankings also acknowledge that larger cities are not the only attractive options. Smaller communities in the Treasure Valley and Central Idaho are gaining recognition for their distinct character. Kuna, Star, Kimberly, Hailey, and Emmett were cited as places with their own unique advantages. These towns offer residents an alternative to the pace of life in Boise and Meridian, often emphasizing small-town feel or specific outdoor access.
The compilation of these five communities reflects a diverse set of living environments within the state. The final list includes Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Kuna, and Star. Each city appeals to different priorities, whether that is job availability, school quality, or community size. The data indicates that Idaho offers multiple high-quality options for residents in 2026, with no single city holding a universal monopoly on the title of best place to live.
