Kuna residents will gather at the Ridley's parking lot on Dec. 5 to support a community toy drive dedicated to the memory of Daniel Cook. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is scheduled for the anniversary of a 2013 traffic accident that claimed the life of the 11-year-old student. The Cook family hosts the drive to provide resources for children in Kuna schools.

Daniel Cook died when his school bus collided with a dump truck at a local intersection. Four other children were injured in the crash. The family has organized the giveaway for the past several years as a way to honor his memory. They accept new unwrapped toys, clothing, and monetary donations for the event.

Robin Birch, Daniel's mother, said the community response to the tragedy provided essential support for the family. She stated that Kuna stepped up for them immediately after the accident. Birch noted that residents often approach the family at the toy drive to share memories of Daniel, which helps them during the anniversary period.

Rob Cook, Daniel's father, recalled specific details from the day of the crash. He described a note left at the intersection by a classmate named Tanner. The note thanked Daniel for allowing Tanner to sit with him on the bus during grades four, five, and six. Cook said he remembers the sentiment expressed in the message about hoping to see Daniel in heaven.

Cook said he is grateful for the 11 years he spent as Daniel's father. He emphasized that Daniel taught those around him that small acts of kindness can change a life. The family aims to ensure Daniel is not forgotten by continuing the tradition of giving back to the local student population.

Daniel is buried at the Kuna Cemetery. The toy drive serves as a direct link between his memory and the current Kuna school community. The event continues to operate on the same day each year to maintain consistency for donors and recipients.

The family encourages residents to bring items to the Ridley's parking lot on Dec. 5. Donations are distributed to help kids in Kuna schools. The event marks nearly 13 years since the collision that ended Daniel's life.
