The Minnesota Vikings, the only remaining undefeated team in the National Football League, travel to Detroit on Sunday to face a Lions offense that is averaging 30.7 points per game.
The Vikings have built their six-win season on a defense that allows just 12.3 points per game, the lowest total in the league. Their special teams unit has also performed at a high level, helping them maintain their perfect record.
The Detroit Lions, currently 4-2, rank second in the league in scoring behind only the Buffalo Bills. This matchup pits the NFL's most stingy defense against one of its most productive offenses.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff described the opportunity to play the league leader as a chance to demonstrate the team's capability.
"You want to play the best, you want to beat the best," Goff said. "You want to have these opportunities to show what you’re made of."
He added that the Vikings present a difficult challenge on paper and that the team looks forward to solving it.
Minnesota quarterback Kyler Murray expressed confidence in his offensive group despite their recent struggles. The Vikings have scored only four touchdowns over their last five games, averaging 1.5 offensive touchdowns per game.
"We’ve just got to end the drive with touchdowns instead of kicking field goals," Murray said.
That low scoring average is the second-lowest in the NFL. The Lions, by contrast, feature a balanced attack led by Goff, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, and wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.
Goff has thrown 223 passes without an interception, a mark that ranks sixth in the league for the most attempts without a pick to start a season. He has also thrown 14 touchdown passes without an interception, matching Russell Wilson’s 2019 record for the most touchdown passes without a pick through the first six games.
Goff currently leads the NFL with a 12.5 passer rating, 298 passing yards per game, and 14.67 passing first downs per game.
The last time a team giving up 13 or fewer points per game faced a team scoring 30 or more in Week 8 or later was in 2019. That season, Baltimore's offense defeated New England's defense, handing the Patriots their first loss of the year.
