Lothar Matthaus, the former German international and 1990 Ballon d'Or winner, stated on Tuesday that Harry Kane’s recent award success should facilitate a contract extension for the England striker at Bayern Munich. Matthaus made these remarks during an online media roundtable, arguing that the honor improves the player's standing in ongoing negotiations.
Kane received the Ballon d'Or on Monday, becoming the first English player to win the football prize since Michael Owen in 2001. The award recognized a standout season in which Kane scored 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions. His performance contributed to Bayern Munich securing the Bundesliga title and the German Cup. Kane also advanced to the World Cup semifinals with England, scoring six goals during the tournament.
The 33-year-old forward joined Bayern Munich from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023 for a reported 100 million euros. Since arriving in Germany, he has won the league title twice. Matthaus noted that the club environment played a role in Kane’s success. "Maybe he was dreaming to win the Ballon d'Or … but you have to play in a big club like Bayern. He found his peace in Munich and the right club with the right teammates," Matthaus said.
Matthaus acknowledged that winning the award may increase Kane's financial demands. "I think he gets a bonus (for winning the Ballon d'Or); 36 years ago I got nothing," he said. However, he emphasized that the timing is favorable for both parties. "But it is about more than money. It is a good moment to sign (a new deal) for Bayern. Bayern helped him get this Ballon d'Or."
The former captain predicted that Kane will commit his future to the club for the next two to three years. "The relationship between Harry Kane and Bayern Munich is perfect, and with everything that has happened in the last three years, I think Harry will sign his contract for the next two, three years," Matthaus added.
Bayern Munich currently leads the Bundesliga standings. The team faces Magdeburg on Wednesday in the second round of the German Cup competition.
