Drivers and walkers in Marion County are facing a surge in vehicle-pedestrian interactions this year. Local law enforcement agencies responded to 159 crashes involving pedestrians through late October. That total matches the highest single-year count recorded in the county over the past decade, a benchmark previously set in 2019.
While collision numbers have climbed to a ten-year peak, the number of fatalities remains below recent averages. State records indicate that eight pedestrians have been killed on Marion County roadways from January through October 29. This figure stands in contrast to the 433 pedestrian fatalities reported across the entire state of Florida during the same period.
The recent months have brought a series of fatal incidents to local attention. An elderly Ocala pedestrian was struck and killed by a pickup truck on U.S. 441 this past weekend. In late September, a 32-year-old man died after being hit by a vehicle in Belleview. Earlier in the summer, a pedestrian was killed by a semi-truck on Interstate 75 in Ocala during overnight hours.
Spring fatalities also contributed to the yearly count. A train struck a pedestrian near downtown Ocala in mid-March. Just weeks before that incident, another person was killed while crossing County Road 484.
Historical data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reveals a fluctuating pattern of pedestrian deaths in the county. Fatalities stood at 16 in 2017 before dropping to a decade-low of 11 in 2018. The count rose to 20 in 2019 and 22 in 2020. From 2021 to 2025, the county recorded 89 pedestrian deaths across 740 collisions. That five-year span averaged nearly 18 fatalities per year, with 2024 marking the deadliest period when 22 pedestrians were killed.
Over the full ten-year timeline from 2017 to 2026, Marion County roadways have seen a total of 1,480 pedestrian crashes. State traffic records show that pedestrian fatalities have consistently represented between 12% and 20% of all traffic-related deaths in the county during this period.
