Osceola County deputies met Irene Miller at the airport gate Friday morning as she returned from a work trip in Las Vegas. Body camera footage shows officers approaching her as she deplaned, escorting her through the terminal, and placing her in handcuffs.
The arrest followed a 911 call placed by one of Miller's children two days prior. The caller reported that a dumbbell had fallen on the head of her 9-year-old brother. Deputies arrived at the family home in Kissimmee shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 and found four children, ages 9, 11, 12, and 14, with no adults present.
Fire rescue crews transported the injured boy to Celebration Hospital. Medical staff treated him and discharged him. A deputy spoke with Miller by phone after the discovery. She stated she was working in Las Vegas and planned to return home on Oct. 23. Records show she left Florida on Oct. 18.
Miller told investigators she had hired a babysitter from Tampa to assist with school mornings and check in on the children. The agreement did not require the sitter to stay overnight. The children's father agreed to take custody of the four kids while detectives arranged the airport pickup.
Authorities booked Miller, 50, into the Orange County Jail on four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm. Sheriff Chris Blackmon stated the office would not tolerate child neglect. He added that charges would be brought against parents who fail to properly supervise their children.
