The Ballon d'Or remains football's highest individual honor, yet its criteria often contradict the nature of a team sport. On Monday, Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane claimed the prize, ending a 25-year wait for an English winner. His victory follows a 17-year period where Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dominated the podium. Together, the two superstars collected 13 of the 17 awards handed out between 2008 and 2025. Messi holds the record with eight trophies, while Ronaldo has five.

The award's history stretches back to 1956, when Sir Stanley Matthews became the first recipient. For nearly 40 years, only European players were eligible. That restriction lifted in 1995, allowing players at European clubs from any nationality to compete. In 2007, the prize opened to players competing anywhere in the world. Liberia's George Weah was the first non-European winner in 1995. However, he remains the only player outside Europe and South America to claim the title in the 31 years since.

Positional bias continues to shape the voting. Russia's Lev Yashin is the only goalkeeper to win the award, doing so in 1963. Italy's Fabio Cannavaro was the last defender to receive the honor in 2006. Cannavaro noted that goalkeepers and defenders are integral to a team's success. He argued that if a goalkeeper saves 15 matches in a year, they deserve recognition. Despite these arguments, voters have largely ignored defenders and goalkeepers in favor of attackers and midfielders.

Commercial interests have also altered the award's perception. Steve Martin, a partner at MSQ Sport + Entertainment, said players now market themselves as independent brands. This shift has made the prize a larger spectacle. Former defender Ramon Vega criticized this trend, stating that monetization is taking the award in the wrong direction. The voting panel includes journalists from 100 countries, but global representation does not always translate into fair recognition.

Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o retired in 2019 without winning the Ballon d'Or. Jose Mourinho, who managed Eto'o at Inter, said the striker deserved the prize. Mourinho noted that Eto'o won two Champions League titles with Barcelona and one with Inter. He also highlighted that Eto'o was the world's best striker for several years. Weah expressed surprise that no other African player has won the award since his victory in 1995. He stated that other players have deserved the title, but the decision rests with the selectors. France Football organizes the award and selects the final shortlist of 30 players.

The current voting process relies on an international panel of journalists. However, the award still heavily favors European competitions. Players from other continents often compete in Europe's top leagues, yet they rarely win. The prize was created to honor individual excellence, but its current structure often reflects commercial appeal and European dominance. Kane's win marks a new era for England, but the structural issues regarding position and geography remain unresolved for the 2026 cycle.
