Residents in Eagle will no longer see a new Costco warehouse near the intersection of Highway 55 and Hill Road. The company withdrew its application for the project, ending months of planning uncertainty for the community.
The City of Eagle confirmed on Monday that the retailer is not moving forward with the development. According to city officials, Costco submitted its notification of withdrawal on October 16.
The proposed site covered approximately 27 acres. The design called for a warehouse exceeding 160,000 square feet, a gas station, and hundreds of parking spaces. The project had been on hold while the company addressed transportation requirements and potential road improvements.
Reactions to the proposed store were divided. Some residents supported the idea of having a major retailer closer to home. Others raised concerns that the new location would increase traffic in the area.
The cancellation leaves shoppers in the southern Treasure Valley with one fewer new option in the immediate future. However, another Costco is set to open in the region soon. The new warehouse on South Meridian Road, near Kuna, is scheduled to open on Thursday, November 5.
Costco has not announced whether it will look for a different site in Eagle. The company left its options open after the withdrawal, but no timeline for future proposals has been set.
The Eagle project was one of several recent retail developments in the Treasure Valley. The withdrawal follows a period of active planning and community discussion regarding large-scale commercial growth in the area.
