College football remains volatile, with Week 9 delivering dramatic shifts in the AP Top 25. USC’s surge, a top-two upset by Ohio State’s loss, and dominant defensive performances by UCLA and Utah defined the weekend.

USC’s Trojans rebounded from their lowest point total under head coach Lincoln Riley, which was a seven-point loss at Wisconsin the previous week. On Saturday, the team defeated Ohio State in what Riley called the most impressive victory of his tenure. Ohio State became the fourth consecutive AP Top 2 team to fall to an unranked opponent, though the loss followed a week where new quarterback Luke Fahey played well.

At the top of the rankings, UCLA and Utah demonstrated stability. UCLA, now 9-0, defeated Nevada and forced four turnovers, tying New Mexico for the most in the nation with 26 total. The Bruins have allowed 10 points or fewer in five games this season. Utah routed Cincinnati 49-25, with quarterback Devon Dampier throwing for 260 yards and three touchdowns. The Utes led 42-6 at halftime, extending their undefeated record.

Notre Dame survived a slow start against Navy to win 35-13, utilizing nine different receivers. Jerome Bettis Jr. led the receiving corps with six catches for 78 yards and a touchdown. This performance sets the stage for a critical matchup against Miami, which remains 10-0 but played defensively porous games against Florida State and North Carolina, allowing eight passing touchdowns in those two contests.

Indiana secured its second consecutive overtime victory over Minnesota. The game featured a 60-yard field goal by Paddy McAteer that tied regulation, followed by a 25-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Grant Wilson to Charlie Becker. Wilson, who entered in the second half after starter Josh Hoover was injured, finished with 156 passing yards and 26 rushing yards.

Other notable results included Georgia’s 27-8 win over Florida, where the defense forced four turnovers and held Florida to 54 rushing yards. Wake Forest defeated Virginia 51-7, giving quarterback Gio Lopez 221 passing yards and a score before he left with a knee injury. Texas won 31-3 against Mississippi State, with Arch Manning throwing for 220 yards and three touchdowns despite being sacked six times.

The weekend results have set up several high-stakes matchups for Week 10. Miami hosts Notre Dame, while BYU and Utah prepare for their Holy War rivalry game. Kentucky, currently 7-1, will play on the road at Tennessee. These games will determine which teams hold their ground in the early playoff race.
