Kyle Wills took office as Mountain Home's police chief Tuesday after serving nearly three decades in law enforcement. He joins from the Boise Police Department, where he worked on the motorcycle unit until retiring recently. Wills brings 29 years of experience to the role.
"I think the most important role or job of a police chief is to take care of the people that are charged with taking care of the community," Wills said.
Wills steps in after a period of turnover at the department. Former Chief Johnathan Thompson resigned in late April 2025 amid departmental issues. Interim chiefs Ty Larson and Jake Dudley then led the force until Tuesday's swearing-in. Mountain Home Mayor Richard Sykes credited the two with carrying the department through that stretch. "Chief Larson and Chief Dudley, you guys hit it out of the park. You guys kept us afloat," Sykes said. Sykes also welcomed Wills to the city, telling him, "Thank you for being part of our city now, our city family."
Wills said his work will center on ties between officers and residents. "I think that the greatest thing a police department can do is have a good relationship with the community. That means transparency. That means community policing, that means being part of the community," he said. Wills said he plans to be immersed in the community.
