Ada County Victim Services reports rise in domestic violence calls
Center director cites population growth and increased awareness as reasons for higher reporting rates in the Treasure Valley.

The Ada County Victim Services Center is receiving more calls related to domestic violence and sexual assault. Trina Allen, the center's executive director, stated that the increase is driven by population growth and a greater understanding of abuse among residents.
Allen noted that while Boise and the Treasure Valley are family-friendly, daily abuse continues to occur. The center is working with local providers to link survivors with medical care, counseling, and legal support during this period of heightened reporting.
Lauren Smith, regional chief nursing officer at Saint Alphonsus, explained that patients often arrive at emergency departments in states of sadness, anger, or fear. Exams are conducted confidentially, and hospital staff connect patients with services beyond the immediate medical setting, including resources at the victim services center.
The center coordinates partners to offer comprehensive support. Allen said free filing workshops are held twice a month, allowing individuals leaving unsafe situations to access civil attorney support without an appointment. A separate case orientation program helps victims understand the court process and available resources.
October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the 25th anniversary of the Ada County Community Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner team. This partnership between St. Luke’s and Saint Alphonsus includes 10 specially trained registered nurses. According to St. Luke’s, the team completed 165 exams over the past 12 months at emergency departments and the victim services center.
Smith, a former forensic nurse examiner, said the community has expanded services for patients and their families. She praised the connections made by the Ada County Victim Services Center to ensure support is available for those affected.
The center supports people seeking information, planning to leave, or ready to leave an abusive relationship. Allen told residents, “I would want people to know that you’re not alone.” The center is located at 417 S. 6th St. in Boise, operates 24 hours a day, and can be reached at 208-577-4400. All services are free.
