Saquon Barkley is officially active for the Philadelphia Eagles' Monday night game against the Dallas Cowboys. The running back will return to the field at Lincoln Financial Field, marking his first appearance since the team's Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
Barkley was listed as questionable with a hamstring injury earlier in the week. He practiced in a limited capacity on Thursday and Friday before becoming a full participant on Saturday. His return comes at a critical time for a roster missing key offensive pieces.
Quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season after blood clots were found in his lungs. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith is also out with a hamstring injury. These absences have forced the Eagles to rely heavily on their running game, but production has been inconsistent.
Barkley has rushed for 182 yards without a touchdown in four games this season. He played fewer than 16 percent of offensive snaps in half of those appearances. The injury history includes a stinger in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans and the current hamstring issue that has kept him on the sidelines.
The numbers show a clear difference in effectiveness when Barkley is on the field. He averages 5.1 yards per carry on 36 attempts. All other Eagles running backs average 2.8 yards per rush on 71 attempts. In the previous week against the Carolina Panthers, Dameon Pierce carried the ball 12 times for 35 yards and a touchdown.
The Eagles offense has averaged fewer than 4.0 yards per play in three consecutive games, a streak not seen since 1999. They are being out-gained by 108.3 total yards per game, the worst mark in the NFL. The team has won four straight home games against Dallas, tying the second-longest streak in franchise history.
