The Atlanta Dream entered the 2026 WNBA Finals as a team that has never played a decisive Game 7 in the championship series. The league only expanded the Finals to a best-of-seven format for the second time this season, leaving the franchise without a direct precedent to guide their final matchup against the Golden State Valkyries on Saturday.

The Dream secured a spot in the title-clinching game after an 80-69 victory at State Farm Arena on Friday. The win ended a late rally by Golden State and set the stage for a decisive contest in San Francisco. The game is scheduled to tip off at 8 p.m. on Saturday and will be broadcast on USA Network.

While the Dream lack specific history in this exact scenario, other Atlanta professional teams have extensive records in decisive postseason games. The Atlanta Braves have played nine decisive Game 5 or Game 7 matchups since moving to the city. They have won three of those games and lost six. Their wins include two National League Championship Series games and one other contest, while their losses include the 1991 World Series and the 2020 National League Championship Series.

The Braves also have a perfect losing record in four decisive Game 5 division series matchups. The Atlanta Hawks have fared better in high-stakes games. The team is 10-5 in decisive Game 5 and Game 7 contests. Their record includes a 2021 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference semifinals and a 9-2 record in series-deciding first-round games. The Hawks have never reached the NBA Finals.

Atlanta United FC has a 1-1 record in decisive games of first-round playoff series. The Falcons do not play in best-of series. The former Atlanta Thrashers were swept in their single playoff appearance. The Dream were swept in all three of their previous Finals appearances in 2010, 2011, and 2013, all of which were in shorter formats.

Head coach Karl Smesko addressed the historical context with a focus on the immediate opportunity. "We have one more game," Smesko said. "We've got a great opportunity. We expect to go out there and play great."

The Dream will face Golden State in the winner-take-all game. The outcome will determine the 2026 WNBA champion. The game follows the Dream's recent surge in performance and the league's shift to the expanded Finals format.
