Adebayo becomes Heat career rebounding leader in season opener win

Bam Adebayo secured his place at the top of Miami Heat career statistics on Wednesday night, passing Udonis Haslem for the team lead in rebounds. The milestone occurred during a 129-117 win over the Atlanta Hawks, which marked the Heat's first victory in their first five games of the season.

Haslem held the franchise record with 5,791 rebounds accumulated over his 20-season career in Miami. Adebayo recorded nine rebounds in Wednesday's game, bringing his total to 5,794. The forward had pursued this specific record for years, finally overtaking his longtime teammate in front of a home crowd.

Adebayo spoke to media in Atlanta after the final horn, noting the closeness of his relationship with Haslem. He stated that Haslem had been a constant presence throughout his ten-year professional journey. A member of the Heat staff presented Adebayo with the game ball to commemorate the achievement.

Coach Erik Spoelstra described the locker room reaction as a special moment for the team. He praised Adebayo's work ethic and ability to secure rebounds in traffic. Spoelstra emphasized that breaking the record of a former captain and brother-in-arms was a well-deserved accomplishment for the forward.

Haslem served as the Heat captain for many years before retiring, a role Adebayo subsequently assumed. The forward now stands as the franchise leader in rebounds while also ranking second in scoring behind Dwyane Wade. He currently sits third in assists and steals, and fifth in blocked shots among Heat players.

Adebayo entered the NBA in 2017 after the Heat selected him with the 14th overall pick in the draft out of Kentucky. Since the 2017-18 season, only nine players in the league have recorded more total rebounds than he has. The forward credited his support system for helping him reach this statistical milestone.

The win ended a five-game winless streak for Miami. Adebayo finished with a double-double, adding points to his nine rebounds. The team will look to build on this momentum in their next scheduled contest.
